Illuminating the art of cinematography and studio lighting for creators everywhere.

The Story Behind the Light
Founded by professional gaffer Lucas Gray, StudioLights.org began with a simple mission: to demystify the complex world of lighting.
While the internet is full of camera reviews, true knowledge about shaping light—the very essence of photography and filmmaking—is often hard to find. Today, StudioLights.org is dedicated to educating, inspiring, and supporting filmmakers, YouTubers, and content creators around the world.
From high-end cinema rigs to budget-friendly home studio setups, we break down the gear and techniques that make an image look “cinematic.”

Who is Lucas Gray?

Based in the Midwest, Lucas is a working Gaffer and Cinematographer with a passion for visual storytelling that spans decades.
“My obsession with imagery started early. In high school, I spent all my savings on my first DSLR camera. I became the designated photographer for my classmates, learning the basics of composition and exposure by trial and error. That curiosity led me to film school, where I realized that a camera is just a box—light is the paint.
Since then, Lucas has built a career in the film industry, working on sets ranging from indie projects to major motion pictures. His credits in the lighting department include renowned films such as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and Far from the Madding Crowd.

Why StudioLights.org?

Throughout his career, Lucas noticed a pattern.
“Whether on a professional film set or in online forums, people kept asking me the same questions: ‘How did you light that?’, ‘What’s the best light for my home studio?’, or ‘Why does my video look flat?’
Realizing there was a gap between professional Hollywood knowledge and accessible advice for creators, Lucas founded StudioLights.org.

Our Philosophy
We believe that gear doesn’t create art, artists do—but good gear helps.
StudioLights.org is not just about specs and numbers. It’s about how those tools perform in the real world. We combine the technical precision of a Gaffer with the practical needs of a modern content creator.
