Our Testing Process

“Specs lie. Real-world sets don’t.”

At StudioLight Lab, we don’t just read the box. We drag the gear onto muddy film sets, run it for 12 hours straight, and measure the light with industry-standard meters. Here is how we decide if a light is worth your money.

How We Review Gear

1. The “Burn-In” Test

Before we measure anything, we turn the light on at 100% intensity and leave it running for at least 4 hours. Cheap LEDs often overheat, shift color, or dim automatically as they get hot. If a light can’t survive a half-day shoot, it doesn’t make it to our recommended list.

2. Photometrics Verification

Manufacturers love to exaggerate their brightness. We use professional Sekonic C-800 spectrometers to measure:

  • True Output (Lux): Is it actually as bright as they claim?
  • CRI & TLCI: Will skin tones look natural or green/sickly?
  • Fan Noise: We measure decibels at 1 meter. Essential for video shooters.

3. The Build & Rigging Check

As a working Gaffer, I need to know if a light clamp is going to slip. We test the yoke strength, the quality of the plastic/metal, and whether the cabling is robust enough for location work. We also test Bowens Mount compatibility with heavy softboxes.

4. Value Assessment

Not everyone needs a $5,000 Arri Skypanel. We judge gear based on its price bracket. A $150 Neewer light isn’t held to the same standard as a Prolycht, but it must be the best possible light for that $150.

Our Promise to You

StudioLight Lab is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. However:

  • We never accept payment for positive reviews.
  • We buy most of our own gear or return loaner units to manufacturers after testing.
  • If a product breaks or fails on set, we will tell you.

Keep it lit,
