What to evaluate before buying

  1. Output at a stated distance.​ A lux figure means nothing without the distance it was measured at. Normalise everything to 1 metre before comparing.

How to read panel specs

Look at lux, not lumens.​ Lumens measure how much light the source emits; lux measures how much lands on your subject. Lux is what determines exposure.

Normalise to one metre.​ Illuminance follows the inverse-square law, so divide a 0.5 m figure by four and a 0.3 m figure by roughly eleven before comparing. A “1,580 lux” pocket light and a “1,580 lux” studio panel are not in the same class if measured at different distances.

One caveat: when the subject distance is less than about five times the largest dimension of the source, falloff is slower than the inverse-square law predicts. For that reason, 0.5 m figures are of limited use for large panels — 1 m figures are more reliable.

Are LED panels suitable for still photography?
